Funktion*, a spin-off startup from Norm, set out to seamlessly merge advanced technology with daily wear, aiming to make tech an invisible yet integral part of our clothing. The goal was to move beyond fashion accessories and create smart clothing that genuinely enhances comfort, safety, and independence in daily life. We aimed to elevate clothing into a more meaningful application of technology.

The product consists of two main components: the Kontakt Grid and various modules. The Kontakt Grid is a flexible, washable network of textile cables and connectors. The modules include sensors, batteries, lights, heating, and haptic feedback units, all designed to clip into the Kontakt Grid and provide a range of smart functionalities.
Smart clothing could improve daily experiences by integrating functions such as heating for cold weather, lighting for visibility, or sensors for health monitoring. These features are tailored to individual needs and preferences, making everyday wear more functional and personalized.
We encountered significant challenges with existing tech components, which lacked the necessary comfort, usability, and design for integration into clothing. To overcome this, we developed the Kontakt Grid, a modular and adaptable system that could be seamlessly integrated into traditional clothing manufacturing processes. This approach allowed for high adaptability and personalized configurations.
The Kontakt Grid and the accompanying modules were designed to be cost-effective and compatible with existing garment production tools, making smart clothing accessible for the mass market. We focused on making the technology nearly invisible and comfortable, which was crucial for user acceptance and widespread adoption.
By addressing these challenges and focusing on seamless integration, we enabled fashion brands to incorporate advanced technology into their designs effortlessly, enhancing the overall value and functionality of their clothing lines.
